SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Police responded to a report of shots being fired at 3429 James Street at around 12:00 a.m. on Monday morning, Sgt. Tom Connellan says in a media release.

Upon arrival, they were told that a man was in one of the apartments at the address and was armed with several long guns.

Police were told that he had already fired a shot through the ceiling that barely missed his neighbor upstairs. The suspect, 48-year-old David Duhamel of 3429 James Street, had reportedly been fighting with one of his roommates over the gun and in the struggle, Duhamel pulled the trigger and the slug went through the ceiling.

The roommate ran from the home and called 911.

The first officers to respond set up a perimeter around the home and tried to get Duhamel to surrender himself but he refused to come out.

The Syracuse Police SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiation team were then called to the scene.

The SWAT team evacuated several other people from the residence who were living in an adjacent apartment and couldn’t safely leave. Police say the reverse 911 system was used to warn neighbors to stay inside and away from the windows and doors.

After several hours, a police negotiator was able to convince Duhamel to surrender and he was taken into custody by the SWAT team at about 3:15 Monday morning without further incident or any injuries.

Two shot guns were recovered from Duhamel’s apartment.

Duhamel was charged with reckless endangermen, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Syracuse City Court this morning.
