SYRACUSE -- The National Weather Service has issued wind child advisories for the eastern half of upstate New York, where brisk winds will make it feel like 25 to 35 below zero in some northern areas.

Wind chill advisories have been issued for Onondaga county and all points east and north.

At about -20, exposed skin can get frostbite in just 30 minutes.

Yesterday was the coldest day in nearly three years. Today will be nearly as cold. Yesterday's high was 8° while today's is expected to be near 10°.

Some schools in the Central New York area are closed or delayed. View a complete list of school closings and delays.

Conditions are expected to warm up a bit over the weekend, with highs hitting the 20s. Temperatures in the 30s and 40s are expected in some upstate areas next week.

Syracuse Police are warning drivers that they will be ticketed for leaving a car running while unattended as it warms up or defrosts the windows. Leaving a car unattended as it's running makes it easier for someone to steal it.
