SYRACUSE -- The search for a new chancellor for Syracuse University is now underway. The Chancellor Search Committee will be tasked with identifying the university's 12th Chancellor and President to succeed Nancy Cantor who recently announced her retirement.

The committee will be chaired by Trustee Vice Chair Judge Joanne Alper. It will be comprised of trustees, faculty representatives, student representatives, a staff member representative, a dean's representative and a representative from the Chancellor's cabinet. The committee will be responsible for identifying and recommending potential candidates for the board to consider.

The executive search firm Spencer Stuart will to assist the group with identifying qualified candidates. A new website dedicated to the search process will be launched in the next few weeks. Members of the campus community, local community and alumni will have the chance to provide their input through a campus-wide survey and several open forums. "Among the steps we will take to assure an open process will be providing ample opportunity for stakeholders across the campus community to articulate their aspirations and offer input," Alper said. "I am especially hopeful that our alumni from coast to coast and around the world will seize this opportunity to engage as stewards of this institution that means so much to all of us. I am confident that we will attract candidates of the highest caliber."

In October, Chancellor Cantor announced in a letter that she will leave SU when her contract ends in June 2014.
