ALBANY (AP) -- Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino is reversing course, saying he may secure a "Taxpayers" minor party line for the general election after all if he loses the Republican primary in September.

The result could be a split of the Republican and conservative vote. Front-running Republican designee Rick Lazio has the Conservative Party line.

On Wednesday, Paladino said he wouldn't be a spoiler for the Republicans by continuing a run in November if he loses the primary. He says that would help Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo.

Paladino says he will decide after the GOP primary whether to keep running on the line favored by the tea party movement. He says he says tea party activists were upset at the plan to abandon an independent line intended to attract tea party voters.
