NEW YORK CITY (AP) -- New Yorkers who got into minor trouble in Manhattan have been sentenced to Sandy -- to help with cleanup efforts after the devastating storm.

Attorneys at the Manhattan District Attorney's office wanted to help with cleanup efforts and created the weeklong community service program.

Last week, 70 people removed hundreds of bags of garbage, debris and mud from the streets and sidewalks in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

More than 1,000 bags of trash and debris were removed. The people were shuttled from court to the neighborhood in vans provided by the Center for Court Innovation, a nonprofit that works on alternative justice programs.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office says more projects could be in the works to help with cleanup efforts.
