WESTERNVILLE -- The headstone belonging to a little girl named Sophia, who died at the age of 9 back in 1861 turned up in a place where children play in Oneida County.

Sheriff's investigators say the stone, which was stolen over Memorial Day weekend from Evergreen Cemetery in Trenton, was "meticulously placed" near play apparatus in the Town of Western Park in Westernville.

The headstone was discovered Thursday morning, and removed by DPW employees. The stone is being returned to where it belongs over a plot at Evergreen Cemetery.

Investigators are still looking for information on who stole it, and whoever is responsible for knocking over another headstone at the same cemetery belonging to a veteran of both World Wars and Korea. Anyone with information should call 315-896-2985.
