OSWEGO (AP) -- A landmark lighthouse along the Lake Ontario shore in central New York is a step closer to being renovated.

The Oswego City Council has approved a nearly $75,000 contract to have asbestos and lead paint removed from the Oswego Lighthouse.

The lighthouse was built in 1934 at the end of a breakwall at the entrance to Oswego Harbor. It has been vacant since the late 1960s.

The city has received a $225,000 grant from the State Canal Corp. to renovate the structure. City officials hope to turn the landmark into a tourist destination.

Work on the interior of the lighthouse is expected to start within the next few weeks.
