SYRACUSE -- The sun breaks on the horizon for Christmas morning. While many of us are opening presents and cleaning up the crumbs from Santa Claus and his reindeer, the Rescue Mission in Syracuse doesn't miss a beat.

This morning 250 volunteers assembled at the mission early this morning to help out both inside the venue to hand out meals, and outside delivering meals to families who signed up for personal delivery. The members who hit the streets to give out these meals did so after individuals and families placed their orders for their own Christmas dinner. Everything from turkey to cranberry sauce was included with the meal, which was given out to 2,100 people throughout Syracuse.

The CEO of the rescue mission, Alan Thornton says, "as a family particularly, you're going to make sure your kids have a great meal on Christmas together. If you're a homeless individual and you don't have those resources, you're going to be able to come to a place where you're welcome, where our volunteers are ready to serve you, and really you have a special experience here with the rescue mission family."

The mission is open 365 days a year for anyone who either needs a meal, or who maybe just needs to step into a warm room.

"It's a great thing to have around for people in desperate need, having a hard time finding a place to live in the winter. you could be freezing to death, but you could be in here, you could be safe, you know that there's people out there trying to help you if you wish to seek for help." says Nicholas Wentworth

Thornton says that there is a need for donations, especially as the push for the end of this year is now one week away. If you are interested in helping out you can go on to their website at rmlifechanging.org or you can go down to their 155 Gifford St. headquarters and drop something off there. Thornton says, "any help you can provide will go a long way to making sure that we can serve the people in need."
