SYRACUSE -- If you leave a running car unattended as it warms up or defrosts the windows, you could get a ticket.

It's a violation of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law to leave a vehicle unattended, and Syracuse Police are stepping up enforcement of this law during the winter months. Police say they'll be handing out more tickets as they try to prevent people from breaking the law.

Leaving a car unattended as it's running also makes it easier for someone to steal it.

Police are encouraging drivers to turn the vehicle off and take the keys with them whenever they leave their vehicle for any period of time.
