SYRACUSE -- Calling all women! A group of local nurses want to make sure you are staying heart healthy. They have put together a fun and educational event so you know how to fight heart disease.

"Strong Women, Strong Hearts" is being held on Saturday, February 2nd from 10am to 4pm at the HealthLink/OASIS Center in East Syracuse (next to the DoubleTree Hotel off Carrier Circle).

"Women do not take care of themselves properly," said Alicia Taylor, a registered nurse with Upstate University Hospital said. "Women are always focused more on their husbands, their mates and their children."

Taylor calls heart disease a "scary reality." The event is put on by the cardiovascular nursing staff at Upstate University Hospital. Friday, February 1, is National Wear Red day to increase awareness about women and heart disease.

"Only 50 percent of women understand that heart disease is their number one killer," Taylor said. "1 in 30 women will die of breast cancer, 1 in 3 will die of heart disease."

The "Strong Women, Strong Hearts" event will have exercise and nutrition information. Women can get health screenings like blood pressure and body mass index.

"They need to know their risk factors, they need to know what to say to their doctor, they need to talk to their doctor," Taylor said.

There will also be free massages, free facials, and demonstrations of Zumba and yoga.

The event is free. To register, call Upstate Connect at 315-464-8668.

CNYCentral Morning Anchor Lisa Spitz will be there to kick off the event!
