HERKIMER (AP) -- A man who worked for 20 years with the shooter who killed four people in upstate New York says he was a good worker but was "spooky" in a recent encounter.

Steve Copperwheat is owner of Environmental Composites in Herkimer. He tells The Associated Press he hired Kurt Myers as a machine operator in the early 1980s at Waterbury Felt, a manufacturer of industrial textiles.

Copperwheat says Myers was intelligent, quiet and got along well with co-workers.

He says he hadn't seen Myers in about 10 years when he saw him at a Wal-Mart three months ago. He says the encounter was "spooky," with Myers very nervous and anxious to get away.

Myers was killed Thursday morning by police in a building where he had hidden since Wednesday morning's rampage
