Bomb scare suspect arrested weeks after Ithaca Commons incident

ITHACA -- Ithaca police Wednesday evening announced the arrest of a man in the case of the suspicious package found outside the Bank of America Building on theIthaca Commons on October 11.

Concern about the package forced the evacuation and the closure of several businesses.Ithaca police charged Matthew Whitney, 37, of Ithaca with Placing a False Bomb or Hazardous Substance 2nd Degree, a Class E Felony.

The suspect was arraigned in Ithaca City Court and released pending further court action. A statement from police announcing the arrest did not reveal a possible motive.
