ITHACA, TOMPKINS CO. -- Ithaca Police and Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies collected more than 100 guns as part of a gun buyback program.

The buyback was held over the weekend at the Ithaca Fire Department Central Fire Station and the Tompkins County Airport Fire and Rescue Building.

The program gives people the chance to voluntarily turn in illegally owned or secured guns to prevent them from getting into the hands of criminals.

Officials collected 33 handguns and 27 shotguns/rifles at the Ithaca Fire Department building. They collected 42 handguns and 45 shotguns/rifles including two assault-type rifles at the Airport Fire and Rescue location.

People from as far away as Canandaigua and Greene voluntarily surrendered their guns.
