SYRACUSE -- Update: An Onondaga County prosecutor says Daquan Dowdell was incorrectly identified as a participant in the attack and charges against him were dropped in April, 2013.

Syracuse Police have arrested a suspect in in connection with the murder of Jamal Holmes and the shooting of Eric Hooks Jr.  on February 4 on Syracuse's south side.

Daquan Q. Dowdell, 21, is charged with second degree murder, second degree attempted murder, and second degree criminal possession of a weapon in connection.

Dowdell is a known 110 gang member and has several prior arrests, many from when he was a juvinille, said Sgt. Tom Connellan at a news conference on Thursday. Dowdell is believed to have shot multiple rounds from a 12 gage shotgun.

Sgt. Connellan says Holmes and Hooks Jr. were not listed in the police department's gang database. He says the police to not have a motive for the murder at this time. Sgt. Connellan says the police did not recover the 12 gage shotgun at the scene.

Police believe Holmes was murdered in a shooting on February 4 along the 400 block of Landon Avenue on Syracuse's south side. 17-year-old Eric Hooks Jr., was shot in the neck and back. Hooks Jr. was rushed to an area hospital and has survived his injuries. Police released Hooks Jr.'s identity at a news conference on Thursday.

A woman who asked not to be identified and lives near the murder scene told CNY Central's Jim Kenyon earlier this month that she heard the victim scream for help.

"He was yelling, ‘Oh Lord please help me, somebody help me.’  I heard the shot and didn't hear him any more.  I looked out my window.  He was lying on the ground."

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Syracuse Police at (315) 442-5222.
