SYRACUSE -- Police in Syracuse say a teenager has died after someone opened fire on the car he was riding in.

The Syracuse Police Department says someone in a vehicle near the South Salina Street and Calthrop Avenue at the Route 81 on-ramp opened fire on a 2010 Chevrolet Impala around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday. Police say the victim's car was targeted, but they don't know why. They say the suspect fired from the passenger side of a red car.

Police say 18-year-old Mahliek Starling of Syracuse was hit. Two other people in the car drove him to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say detectives are currently talking to the two others in the car to gather more information.

Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to call the Syracuse Police Department at 315-442-5222.  All calls will be kept confidential.
