Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for much of upstate New York beginning tonight and lasting into Wednesday, and for some northern and eastern counties, Wednesday night. This wide variety of precipitation heading our way is associated with the powerful Plains blizzard we’ve heard so much about the past couple of days.

As of early Tuesday evening, the center of this giant Plains storm was over southern Ohio and making its way in our direction, while at the same time trying to redevelop a secondary storm off the Carolinas. As the center of the primary storm, the Plains storm heads right for us, winds will pick up out of the east which will draw in just enough mild air into the lower levels of the atmosphere to give much of CNY the whole gambit of precipitation types.

Highest elevations in the immediate CNY region could see up to a couple of inches of a heavy, wet snow and sleet combination, while the Adirondacks into the Green Mountains of Vermont pick up 4-8 inches of snow. However, most lower elevations in CNY, like the City of Syracuse, probably won’t see anything more than melting snow or a slushy coating up to 1 inch. In fact, other than those higher elevations, we may see a little wintry variety to begin with, but end up with mostly a cold rain and a touch of sleet.

On the back side of this slow moving system, there will be plenty of moisture lingering in the lower levels, along with a brisk northwest wind and temperatures turning seasonably cold for some occasional lake enhanced snow showers and flurries Thursday into the weekend. Some parts of CNY could see a few inches of snow Thursday through Saturday, but likely no major accumulations.
