CLAY -- The man accused of kidnapping a woman and child Great Northern Mall in Clay on Thursday night, killing 47-year-old Lori Bresnahan and raping the child, was previously charged with possession of child pornography, according to court papers.
David Renz, 29, admitted to FBI investigators during an investigation in June 2012 that he downloaded and viewed child pornography on one of his four personal computers. He admitted to "using the internet to obtain child pornography for approximately the last 6 years," and storing it on "a partitioned encrypted hard drive so that his roommate could not find it."
Court papers say Renz told FBI investigators he estimated having 100 gigabytes worth of child porn on the hard drive, which investigators located during a search in November 2012. The hard drive contained more than 500 videos and more than 3,000 images. The court papers specify details of the images, which included sexual acts with prebuscent girls.
According to court documents, 13 of the video files and 254 of the image files are "’known’ child pornography, per the National Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) database."
According to documents provided by Judge Baxter’s office, Renz was arrested on January 9.
According to court papers, U.S. Magistrate Andrew Baxter ordered that Renz could be released from custody.
The conditions of Renz’s release include that he may not possess a firearm or dangerous weapon, a computer or device that connects to the internet outside of work, or a passport.
The Courtroom Deputy to Magistrate Baxter confirmed to CNY Central that the order of release required Renz "to participate in electronic monitoring or other type of location verification system."
A spokesperson at Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney John Duncan’s office tells CNY Central that Renz removed a monitoring bracelet that he was required to wear prior to the attack in Clay.
Renz was required to avoid places where "persons under the age of 18 are likely to congregate," including schools, parks and arcades, and not to have any direct contact with a person under 18.
He was also required to refrain from excessive use of alcohol, and follow a curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. or as directed by the court, and must maintain or seek employment.
Renz was an employee at Wegmans on James Street, in East Syracuse. He is a graduate of the East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District.
This is the second time this week an electronic monitoring device was cut off. Police are still on the lookout for an escaped sex offender who cut off GPS bracelet in Tompkins County on Monday.
