ALBANY (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo is scheduled to receive reports from commissions he created during Superstorm Sandy to analyze New York's preparation and response to the storm.

The reports being released Thursday are expected to also consider what steps New York should take to protect Long Island and New York City from the next superstorm.

Nearly a month ago, The Associated Press reported that a state law and a series of legislative reports dating back more than three decades ago first began warning New York politicians to prepare for a storm of historic proportions.

Yet most of the warnings and the 1978 law went unheeded during several administrations and numerous legislative sessions because of tight budgets, a lack of political will and the belief that no such storm would actually hit New York.
