SYRACUSE -- There are two new exciting developments at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.
First, there's a new addition to zoo family.
The zoo announced Monday the birth of its 44th Hoffmann's two-toed sloth. His name is Ocabo and he was born on February 9th. He is the son of Bite Lip and Beauregard. The name Ocabo comes from the Latin American word meaning head. It was chosen because of the young sloth's exceptionally large skull.
Ocabo is doing well and can be seen in the exhibit with the other sloths.
We are also learning more about the new baby patas monkey we first told you about on CNY Central back in January.
We now know the baby patas monkey born on January 7th was a girl. She is named DJ in memory of a long time zoo employee who recently died. DJ was born to parents Addie and M.J.
The Syracuse zoo is one of only 15 in the country to house Patas monkeys. It's part of a collaborative effort between the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and zoos around the world to help ensure their survival.
