PITCHER -- One man was shot and injured after a shootout Thursday night with deputies in the Chenango County town of Pitcher, about halfway between the cities of Norwich and Cortland.
According to investigators 42-year-old Patrick W. Ford from Norwich was driving with his young son when he crashed his pickup truck at 760 State Route 23, in Pitcher.
Deputies say Ford got into a fight with one man who lived at that address and threatened him with a gun.
Investigators say Ford followed that man to his house and fired several shots at people inside.
They were eventually able to escape and called the Chenango County Sheriff's Department for help.
When deputies arrived they were able to get the child into safe hands.
A shootout quickly ensued. Deputies say several rounds were fired by deputies and the suspect.
Eventually Ford was hit in his chest by a patrol rifle.
Deputies immediately gave first aid to Ford and he was flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.
Doctors performed surgery on Ford and he's still in the intensive care unit.
Deputies say the investigation is ongoing.
