This shopping season, leaders in Onondaga County encourage shoppers to buy local. They're asking people to use their transactions to make a transformation.
County Executive Joanie Mahoney and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner signed a proclamation, designating November as "Buy Local" month in Syracuse.
Nearly 40 percent of retail business happens between November 1, and December 31st. This season, the National Retail Federation estimates most Americans will spend $700 shopping for the holidays.
"You don't need to go any other place. Here, you can find unique and interesting gifts, and gifts that really have the soul of Syracuse and Central New York."
If this money is spent at local businesses, it can help revitalize a community.
Spending just 10 percent of your holiday budget -- $70 on average -- can bring big benefits.
"What we're asking people to do is think about shifting one in ten decisions that are commercial, to locally owned independent businesses," says Chris Fowler, Executive Director at Syracuse First. "We can have a cumulative affect of $130 million dollars in economic activity, create 1200 jobs, and $24 million tax impact. Those are significant numbers."
Mahoney grew up with parents who owned a small business; she's seen first hand the impact buying local can have on families.
"Be aware of where your dollars are going. If you are going to spend money, pay attention to where it's going, and the fact that you are supporting families in this community, and jobs in this community," Mahoney says.
Syracuse First, CenterStateCEO, Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse are all spearheading the effort. The campaign, sponsored by AmeriCU Credit Union, kicked off at Eureka Crafts in Armory Square.
