SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse woman who was stabbed 37 times by her estranged husband is now speaking out about the horrific attack that nearly claimed her life.

Katie Stager appeared as a guest on the Talk Tonight on NBC3 and CBS5 on Thursday to share her story.

On July 9, 2010, her estranged husband broke into her apartment at 3 a.m. and attacked her. They were married for 23 years, and during that time Katie suffered from abuse. They later separated and six months later, she was viciously attacked with a hunting knife. Her 3-year-old grandson lay sleeping next to her during the assault. Katie pretended she was dead in an effort to stop the attack.

During the course of her marriage, Katie suffered abuse, but she never told anyone because she says she didn't want to admit to herself that it was really happening. She eventually found the strength and courage to leave him. She now shares her terrible story in hopes of helping other women are are victims of domestic violence.

In Central New York, Vera House, Inc. and Manlius Pebble Hill School partnered to host a news conference in conjunction with One Billion Rising, an organization that aims to raise awareness of domestic and sexual violence against women.
