HOMER -- Parents in Cortland County are raising concerns about the possible closure of an elementary school. There was quite a crowd in Homer High School's auditorium for a public forum Tuesday night. Parents and school officials discussed the options for Hartnett Elementary School.
The Homer Board of Education is trying to figure out the best way to utilize the school building. A feasibility study found two options. Study results say the building could either stay open as a K-6 school, or close.
Parents say if the school closes, it would mean bigger class sizes, longer bus rides, and losing a sense of community. Renea McNeill has two kids at the elementary school. She says, "I think they're trying to save money in the wrong direction. I think it would be better to keep the school open for the community. They get a real sense of community living there and going to the school."
"I think the math indicates it's a three percent portion of the overall budget," says parent Rebecca Merritt, "I just don't think three percent is enough to warrant even discussing closing such a fabulous school."
Hartnett Elementary School used to be Truxton Elementary school. Supporters of the school say when Homer annexed the Truxton district, wording in the agreement called for the school to stay open indefinitely. Supporters say enrollment has been declining in past years, but that trend has levelled off.
The superintendent says this decision is about the best and most cost efficient way to use the building.
Consultants will make the final report to the school board on January 12th. A decision will be rolled out, during budget discussions in March.
