NEW YORK (AP) — The number of military veterans who are homeless in the New York City metropolitan area is nearly 10,000.

That's according to Senators Charles Schumer of New York and Robert Menendez of New Jersey.

The Democratic lawmakers said Wednesday that support programs for homeless veterans face funding shortages.

They say military members returning from Afghanistan and Iraq are falling into homelessness sooner than veterans of earlier conflicts. The senators say many suffer from severe psychological trauma.

Citing 2008 federal data, Schumer and Menendez say between one-fourth and one-fifth of the country's homeless are veterans.

This country is so screwed up. It's all about money & power & greed. Nobody should have to be homeless in this country. Of all people "Vets". Come on "So called America", help the one's that help our country. Looks like they should have the title of government slaves instead of vets. Do the country's dirty work and then the heck with them. What a shame. GOD BLESS.

These men and women fight to keep this county free and they are forced to live on the streets? Something is very wrong with this picture. Build housing complexes just for Vets...they deserve much better then they are getting right now. They risk their lives to keep America free and then the polititions can't even see fit take care of them.
Shame on American's for letting this happen!!!!My father, uncles, grandfathers were all veterans and the care and help for them was poor...it's SLOWLY getting better, but not FAST ENOUGH!!!Poor doctors and barely enough medical facilities because politicians line theie pockets with tax payer money and raise taxes till NO ONE can survive!!!
Our Military Veteran's deserve better!!!!God Bless our country, she needs it! Thank you Military persons for your great service, thank you for protecting our freedom!

One more reason to quit fighting senseless wars!

There is a huge psychological impact on these vets who may have found it easier to survive war than to survive life.

Home of the brave?

They put their life on the line so we can live free, yet politicians will still spend 83 million on a campaign versus helping veterans. Americans send money all over the world, but not where it should be. Home of the free because of the brave or should it be Home of the greedy because of the homeless?
