Onondaga County Health Commissioner says not too late to vaccinate

SYRACUSE -- The Onondaga County Health Commissioner says the community is seeing fewer cases of flu this season compared to last. Yet Dr. Cynthia Morrow warns there are more cases of illness to come, "this is a late season. I expect to have flu activity for several weeks, if not two months."  Dr. Morrow does not expect cases of the flu to subside until May.

The number of cases is improved over a year ago, but worse than it was in 2007.  Onondaga County has 40 reported cases over the last week.  That number typically is a fraction of the total number of cases in the community.  Dr. Morrow says there's a good chance the season has yet to peak Dr. Morrow adds, "It's not too late to get vaccinated."  But, she points out it takes a couple of weeks for the vaccination to become completely effective.

The vaccine created this year appears to be considerably more effective than the vaccine used in 2008.
