SYRACUSE -- There's a push locally to educate the public about poison prevention. At a news conference Tuesday morning, Onondaga County Executive Joanne Mahoney teamed up with members of the Upstate New York Poison Control to spread awareness about accidental poisonings.

It comes as a Central New York woman suffers a near fatal poisoning from eating mushrooms at a rest stop. And she isn't the only case. The Upstate Poison Center receives tens of thousands of calls each year. "For emergency or information very often we get calls because there are so many new products on the market coming in from all over the world that people are not sure whether the degree of safety of that particular product. Better safe than sorry," said Lee Livermore of the Upstate New York Poison Center.

The Poison Center is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can reach them at 1-800-222-1222.
