CENTRAL NEW YORK --
As summer approaches, the hiring is getting underway for temporary jobs. As local places put out the 'help wanted' signs, they are seeing more applications this year and that means tougher competition for those searching for work. Life guarding is what often comes to mind when you think of a summer job. And that is one option for anyone looking to work for the Syracuse Parks Department this summer. There are also positions available at playgrounds and golf courses. Program Director, Chris Abbott, says applications are already up over where they were this time last year. So far, they've gotten more than 100, for over 200 jobs. Abbott advices anyone interested should apply as soon as possible.
"We expect to be able to hire about the same number of individuals as we have in past summers," Abbott said. "Although, we may anticipate a greater number of applications, we're already seeing quite a few applications for the summer positions that we'll hire for."
It could be tougher to get a summer job this year. That's because teens aren't just competing with other teens. 23-year-old Jade Scott-Salter is getting her resume ready and looking for a job even if it's just summer help.
"I'm looking for anything right now," Scott-Salter said.
CNY Works did get federal stimulus money specifically to help 14 to 24 year olds find jobs. Youth Services Manager, Andrea Schnobrich, says people looking for summer jobs are going to have to network and not just rely on the help-wanted ads.
"I do think it's tough but it's going out there with a positive attitude, putting your best foot forward," Schnobrich says.
There will be youth employment fairs at the Oncenter in Syracuse. They are:
