SYRACUSE -- Many people are used to driving downtown, parking outside of their favorite restaurant and bar and walking a short distance to get inside.  But the city wants to change that by more than doubling the amount you feed the meter and slashing the price of parking at a city owned garage.

The Syracuse Common Council passed a bill Monday that will hike the rate of on street parking from $.75 to $1.25 an hour.  They hope to counteract it by lowering the amount of money you pay to park in a garage to $2.00 for the first two hours.  The reason they say is because of how construction is eating up the amount of street level parking.

People say they are open to the idea of moving their cars from the streets to inside a garage, but first want the city to clean them up a bit.  Jessica Saube says, "I like parking in the garage better. The reason I like parking in the street is because it is cheaper than parking in a garage. Especially in Syracuse you have the wind, snow and rain. Parking in a garage keeps your car from getting covered."

Jeff Cleeton says, "I think it'd be great but just look at the conditions of the parking garages. I mean they look very bad from here."

The bill is waiting approval from Mayor Matt Driscoll.
