Bishop-designate Robert Cunningham
SYRACUSE (AP) -- A new bishop is taking over as Central New York's top Catholic leader.
Bishop-designate Robert Cunningham will be installed Tuesday afternoon as the spiritual leader of the seven-county Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse during a Mass at Syracuse's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Pope Benedict XVI named Cunningham as Syracuse's 10th bishop on April 21. He is succeeding Bishop James Moynihan, who served since May 29, 1995.
The 65-year-old Cunningham is a native of Buffalo and was appointed bishop of Ogdensburg in northern New York in 2004. He was first ordained in 1969.
Among the nearly 1,000 worshippers expected for the Mass will be 24 bishops and 250 priests.
