ALBANY (AP) -- More than 100,000 New Yorkers have obtained the new Enhanced Drivers License that meets new federal travel rules that went into effect June 1.
The new requirements say citizens returning to the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean must have a federally approved proof of identity and citizenship, such as a passport, passport card, or Enhanced Drivers License.
The state also offers an Enhanced Non-Driver ID for people who don't drive.
New York is one of four states offering an enhanced license. The others are Washington, Vermont and Michigan.
EDL's cost $30 more than a regular driver's license and are valid for eight years. Most people receive them within two weeks of application.
To get one, go to a DMV office with proof of citizenship, proof of identity, and Social Security number.
