CLAY, ONONDAGA COUNTY -- The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department tells Action News that it is investigating a car crash that has claimed the life of a Town of Clay resident.
Sheriff Kevin Walsh says deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash around 9:18 Wednesday morning on County Route 57, just north of Wetzel Road. Witnesses tell police that a 2005 Ford Freestyle, driven by 41-year-old Lisa Turo of Ebury Court in Clay, was heading south and crossed the center line into the path of a 2009 Mercury Mountaineer. The Mountaineer, driven by 39-year-old Dieanna Mercurio of Baldwinsville, was unable to stop in time and struck the passenger side of the Freestyle, causing it to spin around and come to rest in a culvert on the side of the road.
Police say that Turo was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in her vehicle, her son Justin Geary, was sitting in the front seat. He was taken to University Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Mercurio was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Deputies say that members of the Sheriff's Department’s Accidents Investigation team are working to determine why the Freestyle crossed into the path of the Mountaineer. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no tickets have been issued.
