Bad economy increases need, donations are down
SYRACUSE -- The difficult economy has led to a record number of families registering for the annual Christmas Bureau give away of food and presents to families in need.
The total for this season is 4,006 families. That is 1,100 more than ever before. The partners who support the Christmas Bureau are making a plea to the public for financial donations to make up a $50,000 gap that developed because of the increased need.
Executive Director of the Salvation Army Linda Wright says many of the families in need have never asked for assistance before. Many are dealing with unemployment and are struggling to feed their children and buy gifts. Wright says one woman who registered was a volunteer for the Christmas Bureau and, "this year she is in line asking for help."
The food and toy distribution takes place next Tuesday, December 22nd, from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Registration for families is closed.
