MANLIUS, ONONDAGA CO. -- A Central New York congressional race has received a new entrant.
Local businessman Mark Bitz has thrown his hat in the ring for the 25th Congressional District seat currently held by Democratic incumbent Dan Maffei.
Bitz made his announcement Wednesday morning at the Stickley furniture factory in Manlius.
The 50-year-old Bitz, a Republican, is the former owner and CEO of Plainville Farms and the recently closed Plainville’s Nature’s Fare restaurant.
If elected, Bitz says he will work to cut government spending and make Washington, DC more accountable to taxpayers.
“We have sixteen trillion dollars of public debt now, twelve at the federal level and four at the state and local. That’s 118,000 per working person. This is what our economy is going to labor under the next few years, and what we’re leaving to our children,” said Bitz at his news conference.
A third candidate in the race is Ann Burkle, a nurse, who announced a few weeks ago she'll run on the Republican side.
