BALDWINSVILLE -- Authorities are still looking for the driver of a truck that ended up in a Central New York river after a police pursuit early Monday morning.
State Police in Lysander say they were chasing a Nissan pickup truck around 1:42 a.m. when it went into the Seneca River in Baldwinsville, ten miles northwest of Syracuse. Troopers say they were attempting to pull the driver over for speeding, but he did not comply and drove away down State Route 31 west toward the village. As the chase entered the village, police say the truck veered off of Route 31 and onto Charlotte Street, eventually ending up in the river at Mercer Park.
Troopers say the driver wasn't in the truck when fire department emergency crews pulled the vehicle from the river around 3:30 a.m. Officers searched the immediate area but was unable to locate the driver. Later Monday afternoon, a State Police dive team searched the Seneca River near Lock 24 using a sonar device. The search was completed with no evidence of the driver being in the water.
Police say their investigation revealed that the truck was stolen from a residence in Oswego County. Police are continuing their investigation of the chase and the crash. If anyone has any information, they are asked to contact State Police in Lafayette at 315-677-3124.
