SYRACUSE -- A Central New York native was honored for his heroic actions in Afghanistan Monday

Senator John DeFransisco awarded Chief Petty Officer Jeremy Torrisi with the Silver Star at a ceremony in Syracuse.

During a fire fight, CPO Torrisi ignored a ‘do not enter’ order to help some of his fellow soldiers who were wounded.  His actions saved the lives of four people.

Chief Petty Officer Torrisi says it is an overwhelming feeling to be honored. "It's an extreme honor anytime anybody takes the time to talk to you; recognize you.  It doesn't matter if it's the guy on the street who never served a day or a guy who served 20 to 30 years.  It’s very, very humbling when somebody takes the time."

The Silver Star is the third highest award given for valor in the face of the enemy.
