PARIS (AP) -- One man is dead and two were hurt after three separate shooting accidents on the opening day of turkey hunting season.
In the Oneida County town of Paris, state police say 58-year-old Dale Effner of Bridgewater apparently shot and killed himself by accident while hunting Saturday. His body was found in the woods after he failed to return home.
In Genesee County, 46-year-old Scott Hartman of Oakfield was hunting with his father, 71-year-old Howard Hartman of Batavia, early Saturday morning when the older man aimed at what he thought was a turkey but instead shot his son in the face and chest. Hartman's wounds were serious but not fatal.
And in the Chautauqua County town of Arkwright, police say 25-year-old Robert Shaugnessy of Niagara Falls was shot Saturday morning by 73-year-old Charles Fanning of Blasdell, who was hunting separately. Shaugnessy was treated and released for shotgun pellet wounds from his knees to his face.
