AUBURN -- Police in Auburn are seeking the public’s help in recovering tons of metal stolen from a storage facility.
Auburn Police say on Wednesday officers were dispatched to a Clark Street building that is used to store equipment for a local contractor. Police say the complainant, an employee of the contractor, stated that upon visiting the storage facility he discovered between 3-5 tons of metal braces, clamps and brackets along with metal rebar was stolen. This equipment is used for the concrete forming process. Police say the replacement cost for this equipment could exceed $10,000.
These stolen braces, brackets and clamps were stored in metal 55 gallon drums inside the building. It is believed that the thefts occurred within the last several months time and that whoever is responsible was able to drive a vehicle inside the building and most likely made several trips to remove the stolen property.
Investigators say they believe the most likely motive for stealing the equipment was to scrap the metal for money. Local police departments have seen a rise in these types of thefts and are constantly working with local scrap yards over several counties in an attempt to locate the stolen property.
