EAST SYRACUSE -- A local store owner is taking a stand against the state's proposed 'soda tax'.

Michael Wood, a convenience store and deli owner, was joined by President Jim Calvin of the New York Association of Convenience Stores, as well as community members, who are urging the State Legislature to reject the Governor’s proposal to add a penny per ounce tax to the cost of sugary drinks.

Wood said, “Once they take the tax and put it in there, we know it’s gonna grow. They've done it with cigarettes and gasoline. Currently, the government makes more on cigarettes and gas than the retailer does. And that's where soda's gonna end up”.

The proposed ‘soda tax’ could potentially bring in one billion dollars to the state coffers.
