VERONA -- CNY Central wants you to help fight diabetes at the Tour de Cure on Sunday, June 6 at Verona Beach.

The Tour de Cure is a scenic bicycle ride benefiting the American Diabetes Association. The event features routes for cyclists of all levels ranging from a 15 mile family fun ride to a challenging 100 mile “century” ride. The 62 and 100 mile rides do a complete loop around Oneida Lake. There are rest stops along the way with snacks and drinks to keep you going strong in the saddle. The start and finish is at Verona Beach State Park. At the finish line, there is a victory party complete with food, drink, music and more. There's also a competitive side to the Tour de Cure with teams of riders not trying to clock the fastest times, but to see who can raise the most donations.

Funds raised through the Tour de Cure support diabetes research, advocacy and education. The event also raises general public knowledge about the ways in which exercise and a healthy diet contribute to the prevention of diabetes. The Tour de Cure is a nationwide series with rides in 42 states and 89 cities. Over 40,000 people took part across the nation in 2009.

At the event you’ll notice quite a few riders wearing red jerseys. These are people who live with diabetes and showcase the courage it takes to live every day with this difficult disease.

I was personally inspired to take part in the Tour de Cure  for a few reasons. First and  foremost, a few members of my immediate family have diabetes. My brother in law, grandmother and my sister have all courageously battled this disease.  In addition, I could easily see myself heading in that direction as I age. I have had a constant battle with fighting the bulge. Finally, I am on an adventure to become a triathlete and have signed up to compete in the Syracuse 70.3 Ironman race in September. This ride will be great training for any multi-sporter. I will be doing the 62 mile route at the Tour de Cure.

Complete details on the Tour de Cure can be found by clicking here at the Tour de Cure website. Rain or shine this is sure to be a good time and I hope to see you there!
