OLD FORGE, HERKIMER CO. (AP) -- A pontoon-equipped ultralight aircraft crashed taking off from an Adirondacks lake, killing the pilot and injuring his grandson.
Witnesses say the plane nose-dived into a bog in First Lake in the Herkimer County town of Webb, about 90 miles northwest of Albany.
George Whitton tells the Utica Observer-Dispatch he watched the plane taxi around the lake, lift off and come close to clearing some trees when it dipped, rose and banked sharply before dropping into the bog at about 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Officials say 71-year-old Robert Hurd of Camden was flying with 20-year-old Vincent Whitney of Clinton, who walked away from the wreck and is in fair condition at a Utica hospital.
Federal aviation safety officials are on their way to the scene.
