FULTON -- An Oswego County teen who was arrested this summer for allegedly assaulting and endangering her child found herself once again on the wrong side of the law last week.
According to a report from the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested 18-year-old Melissa K. Nichols of Oneida Street in Fulton and accused her of stealing merchandise from the Walmart in Granby. Deputies say Nichols shoplifted hair products, toothbrushes, and clothing worth $49.16.
Nichols has been charged with one count of misdemeanor petit larceny. She is scheduled to return to Town of Granby Court on October 18 to answer the charge.
Nichols and 22-year-old Jeremy Bailey made news in July when both were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child after their then-19-month-old girl was found malnourished in an apartment without food, clothes, toys, or a bed. Nichols was also charged with assault after police allegedly found a cigarette burn mark on the child’s body. Click here to read more on that story.
When asked for comment Monday on who currently has custody of the toddler, Oswego County Department of Social Services Commissioner Frances Lanigan said "It's nothing I can really address."
Police say they originally discovered the child's living conditions during an investigation into Bailey’s alleged involvement in a break-in at the former Nestle chocolate factory building in Fulton.
Court proceedings in those cases are still pending.
