UTICA -- Democrats hope the popularity and charisma of former president Bill Clinton can help embattled members of congress hold their seats. Clinton will appear at a rally this evening in Utica's Stanley Theater to endorse two term congressman Michael Arcuri (D). Arcuri is in a tight race with Republican Richard Hanna. The latest Siena College Poll has Arcuri leading Hanna 48% to 43% with 10% of those surveyed still undecided.
Congressional Quarterly, The New York Times and several other organizations analyze the congressional races, and all have listed the battle for the 24th Congressional District as a tossup.
Several weeks ago the former president was at Syracuse's Hancock airport for a rally on behalf of first term congressman Dan Maffei who represents Syracuse's 25th congressional district. He's facing a challenge from Republican Ann Marie Buerkle.
Tonight's rally is scheduled for 7:30 pm and is open to the general public, however, you must preregister at Arcuri's web site. Clinton will also be in town to speak at Colgate University. Clinton will also campaign for North Country congressman Bill Owens on Monday--Owens who was elected in a special election last year is being challenged by Republican Matt Doheny. That race is listed as a tossup.
