WORCESTER, NY -- Three New York lawmakers and a woman whose trucker husband was murdered at an abandoned gas station in South Carolina have asked state officials not to close several rest stops along upstate highways.

State Sen. James Seward and Assemblymen Marc Butler and Pete Lopez held a news conference Wednesday morning at the rest stop along Interstate 88 in the Otsego County town of Worcester.

That's one of four the state Department of Transportation plans to temporarily close on Dec. 1 to save money. Two others were closed on Nov. 1.

The lawmakers say closing the facilities endangers truck drivers and other motorists.

They were joined by Hope Rivenburg of Schoharie County, whose husband Jason was fatally shot inside his rig after pulling off a South Carolina highway to get some rest in March 2009.

Among the rest stops closed was the one on Interstate 81 south in Central Square.
