SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse area Salvation Army is once again accepting registrations for its annual Christmas Bureau, and says it anticipates an even greater need than last year.
Beginning Monday and extending through December 15, the Salvation Army will be registering families for this year’s Christmas Bureau distribution. Each year the Salvation Army partners with community organizations and volunteers to give a toy, book, and stocking stuffer to each child from a needy family. The bureau also provides a turkey dinner to each family, along with other food items to help the family through Christmas vacation.
The Salvation Army says it forsees a 10% increase in need from last year, which means that approximately 4,000 families will receive food and toys at the distribution on December 22 at the Oncenter in downtown Syracuse. The Salvation Army is also looking for companies and commuity groups to collect non-perishable food items as part of the Christmas Bureau.
The Salvation Army says that due to the recession and rising unemployment the number of families requesting assistance from the bureau has increased dramatically over the past few years.
