Signups also Thurs 10 - 6, Friday 10 - 3
SYRACUSE -- Numbers are way down for this year's Christmas Bureau registration, so they're keeping the toy and food giveaway signup open for two extra days.
Linda Wright, executive director of the Salvation Army of Syracuse, says the heavy snows last week disrupted public transportation and that resulted in drops of over 600 signups, compared to last year this time. So the Christmas Bureau, which provides toys and a basket of food to needy families, will extend the registration deadline and be open at the Oncenter on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Even with the extra registration, Wright does not expect to serve as many as last year's record numbers - and it's not because there are fewer needy. Rather, she says, many community groups and churches are stepping up to help people in their own neighborhoods.
Still, they expect 10,000 Onondaga County residents will get help from Distribution Day next Wednesday, and 8,000 of them will be children.
