PANAMA CITY, FLORIDA (AP) -- A Florida school superintendent who calmly confronted a gunman who threatened to shoot him during a board meeting says God protected him when the man opened fire.

Bay Schools Superintendent Bill Husfelt told The Associated Press that Tuesday's confrontation with Clay Duke seemed "surreal."

Video shows Husfelt speaking calmly to Duke after the 56-year-old pulled his weapon. Duke told the board he was upset that his wife had lost her job, apparently with the district. But Duke only shook his head when Husfelt and board members asked for details.

After a few minutes, Duke fired two shots at Husfelt from about 8 feet away but missed, the bullets lodging in the wall. A security guard then shot Duke. Police say Duke then killed himself.
