AUBURN -- A Syracuse man was arrested last week after police say he attacked a woman with a hammer.

According to Auburn Police, early Friday morning officers were called to an apartment in the Melone Village complex for a report of a domestic incident. When they arrived, officers say they found a man and a woman in the apartment’s kitchen. Police say the victim was suffering from a severe cut to her head and other injuries.

Police say their investigation revealed that the suspect, 25-year-old Russell Eugene Robinson Jr. of Gifford Avenue in Syracuse, was arguing with the alleged victim after Robinson reportedly left his two infant children alone in the apartment. After the 33-year-old victim contacted Robinson, he returned to the home where an argument took place. Police say the argument turned violent, and Robinson is accused of punching the victim in the head and face and striking her in the head with a 16 ounce mallet. The victim suffered a 2 inch gouge to her scalp and numerous scrapes and was taken to Auburn Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police say the victim’s cousin was present during the altercation, and was also struck with the hammer by Robinson when she tried to intervene.

Robinson has been charged with felony assault, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal contempt, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal mischief, and harassment. The contempt change is based on an order of protection against Robinson that was already in effect. He was arraigned in Auburn City Court and taken to the Auburn City Jail.
