Disposing options, other than trash
If you got a new computer, or tv, or music components that replace what you already have---what to do with the old?
Sarah Stewart, recycling specialist at OCRRA, says you should NOT dump the old in the trash, where toxics cannot be separated out.
There is year round recycling at Best Buy ($10 fee, but you get a $10 gift certificate), Newtech Recycling (Sony, Zenigh, LG and GoldStar electronics free, others have a fee) or Bruin Computer (computer components only). OCRRA also has information about other e-waste recycling locations.
Other options, if the fully functional item is only a couple years old and in good shape, are reuse sites like Freecycle or Aroundagain. Or, if a tv is less than 8 years old, check with charities like the Salvation Army.
And, starting in April, when New York's e-waste law goes into effect, there will be more options.
