Area representatives in Congress are reacting to a fatal shooting Saturday in Arizona that injured a Congresswoman.
A federal judge and 9-year-old girl were among killed after a man opened fire outside a grocery store in Tuscon. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was meeting with constituents, was shot in the head and is in critical condition at the hospital. Giffords received her master's degree from Cornell University.
Rep. Richard Hanna, who represents the 24th district in New York says: "My thoughts and prayers go out to Representative Giffords, her family and staff, as well as the friends and family of the deceased. While it appears to be an isolated incident, we have instructed our Washington and district staff to take reasonable and prudent precautions regarding their personal security."
Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle, who represents the 25th district in New York says: "I am shocked and saddened by today's senseless and tragic event.My thoughts and prayers are with Representative Gabrielle Giffords, her staff, Federal Judge Roll and all those killed and injured in the shooting. I also want to extend condolences to the families of the victims. Please keep them and their families in your prayers."
Police say the gunman is in custody. At least five people were killed and others were injured in the attack.
