Over 2 feet of snow has paralyzed travel across the northeastern corridor. The highest storm total so far is Windsor, Massachusetts with 29 inches of snow!  Massachusetts Governor Patrick has declared a state of emergency, called up the National Guard and has opened up shelters in several areasAmtrak has temporarily suspended service between New York City and Boston to fallen trees damaging a power system near Sharon, MassachusettsThere is also a temporary snow schedule for service between Albany-Rensselaer and New York City.  If you are travelling via Amtrak, check ahead here. Islip Long Island's MacArthur airport is closed until Noon. Other delays and potential closing are likely to occur across the northeast. You should call ahead to your air carrier and airport. You may also check the FAA website here  .

Portions of Massachusetts and Connecticut have already seen 18 to 24 inches of snow. The New York City metro area received between 6 and 12" of snow. Long Island was hit harder with 10-16" of stifling snow. Additional snowfall and increasing winds are likely across New England with blizzard conditions developing around the Boston area due to heavy snow and winds of over 35 MPH. Here is a look at winter weather alerts across the northeastern corridor.

In central New York, as expected, we have seen a more manageable and gentler snow with roughly 4" of snow on the ground as of midday. Nonetheless, roads are quite greasy and snow covered. This is probably due to the fact that temperatures are in the 17 to 22° range. The normal salt brine mixture that is used on roadways will not be as effective with temperatures around 20° versus snow covered roads with temperatures closer to 30°. Some road crews are using a combination of salt brine with molasses andsalt brine with beet juice.  These mixtures are supposed to increase the effectiveness of the brine against snow covered conditions. Regardless, there have been reports of several accidents due to the snowy conditions.

Looking forward, expect another coating to 1-2" of snow between mid-morning and sunset across much of central New York. Storm snow will change over to a spray of lake effect snow south-southeast of Lake Ontario, across central New York and the southern tier and Finger Lakes. Many areas should receive an additional 1-4" of snow. However, localized new amounts of 6" or so cannot be ruled out.
